Scotiabank needed a purpose that impacted inside and out. Externally restoring post-financial crisis faith and differentiating the bank in a rising sea of challenger FinTechs. Whilst internally acting as a strategic driver of performance and a unifying force for their global culture. To do this we challenged their leaders to answer — what motivates the bank, who do they wanted to help – and how? Ultimately, we developed a purpose to guide the bank in moments of prosperity and crisis, to navigate evolving marketplaces and strengthen the bank for the future – to stay relevant and successful for the next 170 years.
It was by engaging in a global series of one-to-one interviews with the bank’s senior leaders that we were able to gather insights on what Scotiabank needed from their purpose – relevance, trust and choice, a glue for the culture, and inspiring performance.
In our research we uncovered that Scotiabank was attracting a more diverse customer-base, which their purpose needed to resonate with. As a result, we examined how the purpose could drive a more inclusive and open culture, empowering a team to ensure they could deliver no matter what external challenges lay ahead.
To activate our purpose, we knew the bank needed leaders with a vision for the future, who are confident seizing opportunities to strengthen the bank. We supported Scotiabank to foster a safe working environment with a ‘test and learn’ approach at its heart to drive rapid innovation.
